Frequently Asked Questions

General

How is BeePass different from BeeBreed?

BeeBreed is an excellent institutional system, primarily focused on Carnica, managed by the Landesinstitut in Hohen Neuendorf. BeePass is independent, open to all breeds, and gives you full control of your data. BeePass also adds what BeeBreed doesn't offer: a tester network, a chat, a breeding calendar, and field tools. The two are complementary — you can import your BeeBreed exports into BeePass.

Is my data secure?

Yes. Stored in Europe (GDPR-compliant), encrypted at rest and in transit (AES-256). Full export or deletion at any time. We never sell your data.

Is the free plan really free?

Yes, with no time limit. Unlimited queens, import, 3-generation pedigree, QR codes, field evaluation, DM chat, calendar. No credit card required.

Genetics

How does the BLUP calculation work?

BeePass implements the BLUP model with the haplo-diploid relationship matrix from Brascamp & Bijma (2014). Queen and worker effects are estimated simultaneously, with XGBoost environmental correction and 100 ± 10σ normalization.

See BLUP — Overview

How many colonies are needed for useful EBV?

EBV become informative from approximately 30 colonies with known pedigree, ideally distributed across multiple apiaries and testers. The wider the network, the more accurate the EBV.

Network

How does the tester network work?

You register your F0 queens and send F1 daughters to your testers. They scan the QR code, evaluate the queen in the field, and the data flows back automatically.

What is BeeMatch?

BeeMatch is an algorithm that suggests optimal breeder/tester pairings. Available from the Selector plan. (Launching in 2026.)

Calendar

Does the calendar sync with my agenda?

Yes. Google Calendar (OAuth) and Apple Calendar (CalDAV), bidirectional synchronization.
