QR Codes
BeePass QR codes bridge the gap between the field and the digital world. Each queen (F0 and F1) can receive a unique QR code that gives access to her genetic passport from any smartphone.
Generating a QR code
From the detail page of an F0 queen, go to the QR code section to:
- Generate the QR code linked to this queen
- Download the image in PNG format
- Print directly from the browser
The QR code is permanently linked to the queen's record in BeePass.
QR code contents
The QR code encodes a link to beepass.io/q/{id}. Depending on the queen type, the public passport displays:
F0 queen (breeder):
- Identity (name, race, birth year, marking color)
- Breeder code and country of origin
- Pedigree tree (dam, sire group)
- Breeding values (EBV) if available
- Current life status
F1 queen (production daughter):
- Identity and parentage (F0 dam)
- Breeder information
- Field evaluation form (gentleness, hygiene, vigor)
The passport accessible via QR code is a public view. Sensitive information (precise apiary locations, financial data) is never exposed.
Batch printing
The QR Batch tool accessible from Tools > QR Codes lets you generate labels for multiple queens in a single operation:
- Select the desired queens from the list
- Choose the label format:
- Nicot: Nicot cage labels (30x50mm)
- Round: round stickers for hive roofs (35mm diameter)
- Click Generate PDF to download a print-ready file
Each label displays the queen's name, F0 parents (dam and sire), the QR code, and the international marking color.
Zebra export (ZPL)
For Zebra thermal printers (field polyester labels):
- Select your queens
- Click Export Zebra (.zpl)
- Send the
.zplfile directly to your Zebra printer
The ZPL format uses native QR encoding (^BQ) for optimal quality. Labels are sized for 37x80mm at 203 dpi.
Zebra labels printed on polyester resist weather, propolis, and UV. They are ideal for durable marking at the apiary.
F1 passport and field evaluation
When a tester scans the QR code of an F1 queen, they access a simplified evaluation form:
- 3 criteria: gentleness, hygiene, vigor (1 to 5 star ratings)
- No account required: a visitor can rate, then is invited to create a tester account to save their evaluation
- Gamification: a dialog presents the benefits of joining the BeePass network (EBV access, genetic passport, line comparison)
This mechanism recruits testers directly from the field.
Field use
QR codes are designed for use at the apiary:
- PDF printing: print Nicot or round labels on durable paper
- Zebra printing: use a Zebra thermal printer for durable polyester labels
- Laminating: laminate paper labels to withstand weather and propolis
- Placement: stick on the hive, on the roof, on the Nicot cage, or on the breeding register
- Scanning: scan with any smartphone camera (no app required)
Use cases
- Queen sales: the buyer scans the QR code and instantly accesses the pedigree and EBVs
- Apiary visits: quickly identify each colony and view its history
- Field evaluation: the tester rates the F1 queen directly from the QR code
- Health inspections: the veterinarian accesses traceability information in one scan
- Beekeeping events: showcase your lines at fairs and open days
